While we do things a little bit different than most all other carpet/upholstery cleaners, we welcome questions, and especially all you skeptics. For decades carpet/upholstery cleaning has been done primarily with soaps/detergents and hot water extraction. Unfortunately, there are problems that are inherent to both the cleaning method(extraction) and the cleaning agents(soaps/detergents)
1).The cleaning method itself wastes huge amounts of water(our most precious resource). Over-wetting of carpets not only takes a long time to dry(3-8hrs minimum), it can cause stains to reappear due what is known as a “wicking” effect. Beyond that, I personally don’t like the idea of running a gasoline engine for 1-2 hours while I am cleaning in a home, especially since that engine was driven to that site by yet another gasoline engine. Most troubling is that if the chemically laden water(60-100gal./daily) that is extracted is not disposed of properly, it winds up as “run-off” which finds its way back into our rivers, streams, soil and oceans. At TrueGreen we primarily use a bonnet cleaning method, which allows us to use only a fraction of the water that a “steam cleaner” uses. Not only is it the most sustainable method of cleaning method to clean carpet and upholstery, it is the most effective way to clean with our carbonated solutions.
2). Another common problem with using an extraction method is that there is often a soap/detergent residue left in the carpet/upholstery. The cleaning agent, typically soaps or detergents, must be thoroughly rinsed out of the fibers. Much like washing a load of laundry, if a fresh water rinse is not performed, soap will remain in your carpet and continue to do what it is made to do, attract dirt and oils, which in turn will get your carpet dirtier, faster. One huge benefit of cleaning with carbonation is that there is no residue left on your carpet/upholstery, which allows them to stay cleaner, longer. In addition, most cleaning agents used by “steam-cleaners” are enhanced by other chemicals such as ammonia, solvents, surfactants, brightener’s, and urea.
